You've spent all winter fretting over how to jazz up your backyard. In less than a day, Summit Brick workers fashioned an answer: A patio makeover with an outdoor stone fireplace as the centerpiece.

'With the changing economy, I think people are looking for more permanency in their homes. . . . Nothing indicates that more than a brick home,' or brick and stone additions, Summit salesperson Julie Barela noted during a break from the construction.

Setup began Thursday for the annual Pueblo's Original Home & Garden Show that will take place tonight through Sunday at the Colorado State Fair's Palace of Agriculture.

The 120 vendors in the show bring more than brochures. Using small loaders and trucks - and a whole lot of sweat - they transform the Ag Palace into colorful showcases for their actual products and services.

By noon, a full-sized, above-ground pool and spa marked Parker Pools & Spa's corner of the expo. The first kitchen countertops at the Granite Transformations display were in place.

Elsewhere, a pair of workers for Prutch's Garage Door strained to assemble a heavy metal display that will feature models of actual working garage doors. Buyers 'want to see how they work,' said Prutch's service technician Chris Anderson, a show participant for the past 20 years.

For other customers, the doors help technicians pinpoint any problems with existing doors, Anderson said. Repair service is another key part of the company's offerings and the display adds to customers' convenience, he noted.

The 120 vendors signed up to participate represent another capacity turnout, according to Shawn Sandoval, executive officer of the Pueblo Association of Home Builders, the organizer of the show.

The vendors will feature the latest in landscaping, gardening, home building, kitchen design, windows, fences, paint, solar and many other products and services, she said. Real estate agencies and lenders also will be in attendance.

The show gets underway from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight with a special kick-off party. Cost is $10 and includes pizza, beer and other refreshments. The show's annual Nail Drive Contest begins at 6 p.m.

The show continues from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $5 for adults. Children 12 and under are admitted free. On Sunday, the show offers $3 admission to members of the military and seniors 62 and older.

Home improvement store Lowe's will provide a free children's workshop at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
