The winter's relentless series of snowstorms is leaving major home improvement retailers with the same problem as North Jersey towns and municipalities - there isn't enough rock salt to go around.

Representatives at Home Depot locations in Paterson, Paramus, Mahwah and Lodi all said the stores were sold out of salt, and were directing customers looking for ice removal products to their sand supply. A representative at a Home Depot in Clifton said the store had received a shipment of salt on Monday afternoon, but expected it to sell out 'within minutes.' The stores was limiting customers to five bags per transaction.

Catherine Woodling, a spokeswoman for Home Depot, said the company is working with individual stores to determine which regions need salt stockpiles replenished the most. Woodling said Home Depot is hoping to restock those stores 'as soon as possible.'

Representatives at Lowes stores in East Rutherford, Paramus, Paterson and North Bergen also said they had sold out of rock salt.
