LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WHAS11) - Every winter has its problems.
With the season comes the ever dreaded busted water pipes and each year plumbers are called out to fix the problem.
This year is no exception with the recent subzero temperatures.
WHAS11 went to the Home Improvement Expo at the Kentucky International Convention Center to get cold weather tips from the pros.
'If you have piping in vanities you want to open up the doors to let the air get in there to help keep those pipes warm,' Paul Mangeot of Maeser Plumbing and Heating said.
Mangeot is a service manager with Maeser Plumbing and Heating and he recommends opening the faucet just a little to leave a small amount of water running to prevent freezing.
Insulating a home is a must. Spray foam insulation is a little different than what you're used to seeing.
The air-tight insulation can cost almost double what fiberglass insulation costs. Bradley Shuck with Air Tight Insulation says it can cut down on energy costs from 30 to 50 percent and will pay for itself in three to 5 years in energy savings.
'Basically the big difference is its air sealing capabilities. It fills all those cracks and voids that your traditional insulation is not going to be able to stop that air flow into your house,' Shuck said.
These home ideas will hopefully keep you warm and safe during the winter months.
